Just thinking about painting a house can be extremely stressful.

Painting the house, whether it is the interior or the exterior, is a massive investment of time, money, and energy.

If you do not know what kind of paint you need to use for the different walls of the different rooms and the walls for the outside of the house, it can easily be very costly.

Before even beginning to paint any area of the house, you need to know what types of paint exist, and what these kinds of paint are most useful for.

Knowing what types of house paint exist and what they are most useful for does not need to be complicated or overwhelming. It is very simple to learn what types of paint for the house exist and what places of the house they are most useful for.

Preparations you’ll need to make before painting a house

While you probably won’t be able to paint an entire house in one night, you certainly can (and should) concentrate on one part of the house at a time.

This is important because paint only takes a day or so to dry, and if you stop painting a room or a section of the house halfway, you’ll be painting over freshly dried paint. Doing this can cause inconsistencies in the finished work of your paint job.

To prevent this, make sure you finish painting every section of the house that you intend to paint.

Possessing the right equipment is another preparation you’ll need to make. Make sure you have the right amount of rollers and paint to do things perfectly the first time. There is nothing more inconvenient or stressful than running out of these and having to get them right in the middle of painting something.

When you are painting a part of the house, err on the side of having too much equipment than too little, always.

This may be a little obvious, but when you are painting, wear clothes that you do not mind getting paint all over. It is certainly not ideal to paint in clothes that you might need for work or clothes that you wear every day.

In fact, you may need to wear clothes that are specific for or even designed for painting. Consider this if you intend to paint a significant part of the house, such as the outside walls or the living room walls.

You’ll also want to protect your eyes. Paint can splatter and get in your eyes, and you’ll need some kind of protective eyewear. It would also be a good idea to have something that can cover your nose or mouth on hand, especially if you plan on painting for a long time. Fumes from paint can be harmful.

No matter what the weather is, stay hydrated. You’ll be out in the sun for a very long time if you are outside, and you will need to stay hydrated if you are painting outside.

Even if you are working the inside of the home, you can often get so lost in the painting process that whole hours could go by without having any water. Always have water on hand when you paint. You will need it.

Now that you are armed with some preparations, it is now time to learn about what types of house paint are out there, and where they are best used.

Latex

Designed for the exterior, latex paint is very easy to clean. This is a good thing because when you are painting the exterior of the house, you will want paint that will be easy to clean after it dries.

All you need to clean latex paint is soap and water, meaning that when you clean it, you will not need any complicated materials that specialize in cleaning paint.

Exterior paints can become brittle and they can also crack. This is not an issue with latex paint, as it “flexes” as it dries.

Latex paint is suitable for aluminum, wood, composite, and vinyl surfaces. It also does well on exterior trim, stucco and brick.

If you happen to come across water paint, that is also the same as latex paint. Expect the same kind of performance from water based paint as latex.

Oil

As well as latex paint holds up to surrounding elements, oil paint is that much better at doing this. When this type of paint dries, it will create a smooth finish.

This smooth finish will also prevent this paint from developing cracks or discolorations than any other paint that is used for the exterior of your house.

Porch floors, steps, handrails, doors, and anything on the outside of the house that meets with a lot of traffic will benefit a lot from oil paint.

Primer

Before any coat of paint actually is applied to any interior or exterior wall, primer must be applied.

While primer does not really classify as a paint, it may as well be since it is part of the process of painting something.

Primer is necessary because it is what helps paint stick to the surface that it is applied to. Remember to use the same primer base as your paint. So if you are using an oil based paint, be sure to use an oil based primer.

Acrylic

This kind of paint is water based, but it uses acrylics as the binding agent, which makes the paint a little bit more durable.

Latex is a form of acrylic, and that was covered previously. But another form of acrylic is enamel, and as durable as latex is, enamel is that much more durable.

Knowing what kind of house paint to use for which areas of the house does not need to be complicated. Knowing what kind of coat works for the different areas of the house will save you a lot of time and money.

Another thing that will make sure you have a much easier time when painting your home is knowing how to prepare.

There is a little more to painting a home than just having a bucket of paint and a few roller brushes. Making sure you are prepared with the right knowledge and the right equipment will ensure that you are doing everything right.
